A standard homeowners insurance policy will not cover floods. If you live in a known flood zone, then obviously you would want to get additional coverage to protect you from flooding.
Even if you live in an area not known for flooding you may still want to consider getting flood insurance. F.E.M.A. records show that 25% of all flood losses occur to people who are at low risk for flooding.
